World Nursery Rhyme Week 2023

World Nursery Rhyme Week 2023 will take place from Monday 13th November to Friday 17th November.  World Nursery Rhyme Week was launched in 2013 and promotes the importance of nursery rhymes in early childhood development and education.

Nursery rhymes are excellent teaching tools and help to develop: language and literacy skills; numeracy skills; as well as social, physical and emotional skills.  Megan Fox of Reading Magic has said that “If children know eight nursery rhymes by heart by the time they are four years old, they are usually among the best readers and spellers in their class by the time they are eight”.

Each year, the organisers of the World Nursery Rhyme Week choose five rhymes and encourage children to take part in our ‘Rhyme a Day’ challenge by singing the nursery rhymes.  The five official rhymes for 2023 are:

  • Jack & Jill
  • Hickory Dickory Dock
  • Head, shoulders, knees and toes
  • Row, row, row your boat
  • Wheels on the bus

There are lots of nursery rhymes on You Tube, which you may like to play for your child – including the top 20 English nursery rhymes, available here.   If you would like to find out more about World Nursery Rhyme Week click here.
