National Allotment Week – August 2020

This year National Allotment Week takes place from 10th – 16th August 2020.  The theme for 2020 is Growing Food for Health and Well-being, a reflection of the many benefits of growing, cooking and eating your own fruit and vegetables.

You can find out more about the Week here.

Children love growing fruit and vegetables.  Why not celebrate National Allotment Week by growing something easy like Mustard Cress.  Cress is easy to grow. Simply wet some tissue or cotton wool (don’t water-log it) and sprinkle the seed over. Gently press the seed down to ensure contact with the growing surface. If using a container with sides, stretch clingfilm over the top to keep moisture in.  Cress seeds germinate quite quickly, sometimes within 24 hours. In five to seven days the shoots will be long enough to snip off and can be used in salads and sandwiches.
